2012 SEC Media Days: John L. Smith Is Not Stupid

At the SEC Media Days in Hoover, Alabama on Wednesday, Arkansas Head Football Coach John L. Smith stood behind the podium and gave the sports world what they wanted to hear, his crazy-like-a-fox brand of humor.

Smith was straight to the point when asked if he wanted to coach the Razorbacks beyond the 2012 season.

“Well, certainly. Do I look stupid?” he responded, but then stated “Don’t answer that question.”

The whole room got a laugh out of that remark and the new Head Hog stood there smiling.

That’s John L. Smith.  A man with a quirky, but loving personality.

The pulse of the media going into the press conference was that hopefully Coach Smith would say something crazy to make himself and the University of Arkansas look not so favorable. However, what they received was a man on a mission with Miami on his mind, to win the BCS National Championship.

“This is a program, and we’re all a part of it as players, as coaches, as fans, as a student body,” Smith said. “We all have to relish our position as being a part of this program.”

“And we have one goal, and we’re not bashful about reiterating that goal. That goal is to win in Miami.”

Smith coached as an assistant at Arkansas for three seasons before leaving to take over at his Alma Mater, Weber State. A few months later, he was back in Fayetteville to clean up the mess left behind by his former star pupil, Bobby Petrino.

If you are reading this and have not heard about Petrino then you just woke up from a coma or you were living in a cave on meth. Go google it because I refuse to waste my words about his debacle anymore in this article.

Lying, plus, Jeff Long being your boss, equals living in a two-bedroom apartment in Rogers, Arkansas hiding in shame from the world.

I digress….

In fact, John L. agrees with me.

On whether Arkansas had contacted him before Bobby Petrino was dismissed:

“Could we move on to the next question, at least one with intelligence? No, you didn’t get that, did you?”

“No, to my knowledge, we did not have any interaction till after Bobby was gone. That had all taken place prior to any of that. The actual who reached out to who, all of that stuff, it started with — I’m going to be perfectly honest with you — my talking with the coaches and vice versa. That’s where it came from. And then I reached out.”

And when he reached out the players reached back.

“The one thing about him, is he really cares,” Linebacker Tenarius Wright said. “He wants you to have to have no worries off the field so you can go out and focus on the game.”

That is exactly why Athletic Director Jeff Long hired Smith. In fact, he was hired to hold together what is considered the Razorbacks most talented football team in thirty years.

“He puts a blanket on us, keeps it away from us,” Wright said.

That “it” that Wright is speaking about is the craziness that Bobby Petrino left behind.

Oops, I said I would not talk about it again.

I wonder if Petrino is snuggled up warm in a blanket this morning in his two-bedroom apartment?

John L. Smith was the right hire for this job and only time will tell if the Fox and all his “craziness” is enough to get to Miami?

Coach Smith did a great job at the SEC Media Days and represented the University of Arkansas very well. I believe he will have a special football season this year too.

That is exactly why he came back.  He might be crazy-like-a-fox, but he is not stupid.

John L. Smith is here to win a Championship.

Les Miles At SEC Media Days: Texas A&M More Natural Rival?

SEC Media Days 2012 - Courtesy of AL.com

By Christopher Anderson

Les Miles was asked at the 2012 Southeastern Conference Media Days about Texas A&M being switched with Arkansas at the end of the season.

His response….

“Texas A&M is more of a natural rival than Arkansas”.

Do you as a fan believe this to be true?

It appears to me that most Arkansas Razorback fans are upset the “Battle For The Golden Boot” will not be played at the end of the year anymore.    Why are you upset?   Do you think LSU is scared to play Arkansas the last game of the season?   Do you not think Missouri would be more of a natural rival for Arkansas?

What will the rivalry game with Missouri be called?

Regardless, the Arkansas and LSU game will still be played.   Let’s just hope the SEC does not schedule the game after Alabama.

Mel Kiper – Arkansas leads in Top 5 players returning by position on offense 2012

Written By: Christopher Anderson

Mel Kiper, ESPN’s NFL draft expert, has compiled his list of the top 5 players by position of the returning seniors in college football for the 2012 season.

The Arkansas Razorbacks lead this list with the four returning players on offense.

That list includes:

Tyler Wilson, Quarterback
Knile Davis, Running Back
Cobi Hamilton, Wide Receiver
Chris Gragg, Tight End

Will all four of these Hogs go in the 1st Round of the NFL draft?

Only time will tell.

However, this is no doubt Bobby Petrino’s most talented team returning for the 2012 season.

And “They” Say Petrino Just Throws The Ball?

Bobby Petrino at the Allstate Sugar Bowl

I recently started a thread on our message board at HogSportsTalk.com about an interesting stat I had found while reading Bobby Petrino’s Bio.

The stat comes from ArkansasRazorbacks.com and this is what it says…

“Mistakenly perceived as a coach that focuses primarily on the passing game, the reality is Petrino adheres to the philosophy of balance between offensive production on the ground and through the air. Consider that in the last 13 years of his college coaching career – spent as a head coach, an offensive coordinator or both, – Petrino’s offenses boast 84 100-yard rushers and 60 300-yard passers. That equates to 144 defining offensive individual performances in 157 total games.”

Mike Anderson – You gotta play DEFENSE

Published by HogSportsTalk.com
Written by Christopher “TID” Anderson

I attended Nolan Richardson’s first ever basketball camp at the University of Arkansas in the Summer of 1985. I was 13 years old and away from home for the first time.

It was there I met Mike Anderson and he alone changed my perspective on the game of basketball in a few short days.

The first day of camp Coach Anderson came on the floor at Barnhill Arena and threw a basketball up in the air. We in turn were asked to yell “Rollin’ with Nolan” every time the ball hit the floor.

I had never seen anything like this ever and for a kid it was pretty cool. The ball would bounce faster and faster. We would chant faster and faster….”Rollin’ with Nolan…Rollin’ with Nolan” until the ball stopped.

And then…Nolan would appear out on the floor. Everyone would cheer and everyone thought it was cool. That is how we started camp every day.

Although, it was what Mike Anderson did for me personally that I will never forget.
